  1. Out of curiosity, what did you think of Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap? I notice that you gave it almost as high a score as your festival favorite. I’ll admit that it was well produced, with good (albeit unoriginal) cinematography and a very polished feel, but I didn’t think it flowed particularly well. That is, it seemed like a collection of interviews with the great MCs and didn’t have a narrative to move the film forward. To me, it was fine but not particularly memorable.

    • Thanks for the question. I really enjoyed it a lot. I get all of your criticisms and don’t take issue with any of them, but the unique nature of having an old school MC interviewing other old school MCs was enough to overcome the faults. In other words, while it may not have been particularly innovative or narrative, it offered an angle on the subject that I’ve never seen before. In the end it set out to describe the creative process of the art form and I thought it did that extremely well.
