It would be an easy mistake to turn a family drama into a long, talky, boring affair. Unfortunately, the filmmaker chooses here to turn the movie into a long, predominantly dialogue-free boring affair. Substituted instead is the music of the Pigram Brothers, which is relied upon far too heavily and one song in particular used so many times that it went from a charming guitar-and-ukelele tune to instant eyeroll. My last hope was that I would be able to enjoy this as a glimpse into another culture, but even on that level the movie doesn’t have much to offer over any other film about economic deprivation, alcoholism, and people living on the fringes of society.

Movies seen thus far: 16
Today’s Favorite: Mad Bastards
Festival Favorite: BEING ELMO: A Puppeteer’s Journey
