Old, Repurposed Movie Review: Once
June 24th, 2007
I was excited to see that Once has finally made it to the Broadway downtown so that I could finally correct one of my Sundance mistakes. Every year the festival has several hundred movies playing, so the chances of hitting all the good stuff are pretty much nil.
I enjoyed this movie a lot..it is such a breath of fresh air in a summer where I’ve found most movies overstaying their welcome at over 2 hours. It’s about as basic as a movie gets: guitar-slinging boy meets piano-playing girl. I’ve seen a few reviews call this an extended music video, and that’s not far from the truth in that the vast majority of the movie has cuts from the soundtrack album playing over the footage.
For what is essentially a simple, low-budget update to movies like The Replacements, though, I found myself absolutely captivated. The characters were interesting, the music captivating, and the emotional moments pitch perfect.
