Porto’s Bakery and Cafe

I love a good bakery. The bigger the selection, the better. The only thing that I want to be bigger than the selection is the line. Say what you want about the wisdom of the crowd, but I’ve never been done wrong by a bakery with a line out the door.
My only disappointment on entering Porto’s, therefore, was that it was the first stop on what was a day jam-packed with lots of food stops. That meant that I needed to keep to the plan, dole out the stomach space sparingly, and go slow. As I walked through the long line, which stretches along two different counters at the bakery, and shuffled at a tantalizing pace through the switchbacks that took me back and forth in front of the case that was at capacity with beautiful baked goods, I realized it was going to be a hard feat to manage.
I got the cheese and guava strudel and, despite my efforts to avoid everything else, broke down and also got a chicken croquette, rationalizing that the addition of some protein to a rather carb-heavy day was worth the room. The pastry was perfect, with the fruit and acid balanced nicely with the cream cheese. The croquette, a mix of chicken and cheese, was a bit heavy for any early morning, much less one that held lots of food down the road. I’d do that strudel any day of the week, though.
